Dates are the dried fruit of the date palm tree and as an unprocessed product, a healthy sugar substitute. Dates are also a delicious source of many minerals including potassium, iron, calcium and dietary fibre. Popular date varieties include medjool, delget noor, safawi, khudary, mabroom and ajwa; they vary in moistness and sweetness, so when using dates in recipes, always taste and check the level of sweetness. While obvious to use dates in desserts, try adding a pinch in savoury recipes as well, such as dals and stews, which add a delightful surprise.
Chinese dates such as red dates and honey dates are not related to the common dates, but are dried jujubes.« Back to Glossary Index
